1. لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
90|1|I swear by this land.
2. وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
90|2|And you are a resident of this land.
3. وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
90|3|And by a father and what he fathered.
4. لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ
90|4|We created man in distress.
5. أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ
90|5|Does he think that no one has power over him?
6. يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا
90|6|He says, “I have used up so much money.”
7. أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ
90|7|Does he think that no one sees him?
8. أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
90|8|Did We not give him two eyes?
9. وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
90|9|And a tongue, and two lips?
10. وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
90|10|And We showed him the two ways?
11. فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
90|11|But he did not brave the ascent.
12. وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ
90|12|And what will explain to you what the ascent is?
13. فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
90|13|The freeing of a slave.
14. أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ
90|14|Or the feeding on a day of hunger.
15. يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
90|15|An orphan near of kin.
16. أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
90|16|Or a destitute in the dust.
17. ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ
90|17|Then he becomes of those who believe, and advise one another to patience, and advise one another to kindness.
18. أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
90|18|These are the people of happiness.
19. وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ
90|19|But as for those who defy Our revelations—these are the people of misery.
20. عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ
90|20|Upon them is a padlocked Fire.
