The Impact of Social Media Influencers on Young Minds:

The other day, I came across a post in one of the FB groups I am part of, one of the sister shared her opinion about another sister who apparently is a social media influencer, and to her surprise recently removed her hijab and got into wearing clothes against guidelines.  There were mix responses from other sisters, I also shared my comment over there, which is what I am sharing over here.

In the digital age, the term “influencer” has taken on a new meaning. No longer confined to the realms of politics or business, influencers now dominate the social media landscape, wielding considerable power over their followers’ perceptions and behaviors. This influence, however, is a double-edged sword. While it can be a force for good, it can also lead to confusion and even corruption, particularly among impressionable young minds.

Consider the case of a teenager who follows a hijabi or modest influencer. This influencer, who once used Islam as a cornerstone of their posts, begins to change their approach. The teenager, seeing this shift, may start to believe that if their role model can change their ways, then they too can do the same without any repercussions. This can lead to a distortion of their understanding and interpretation of their faith.

It’s important to remember that personal choices, such as wearing a hijab or a beard, dressing modestly or immodestly, are just that – personal. They are not pillars of Islam, but they are commands of Allah. Some sins carry heavier punishments in the Dunia than others. For instance, while not stealing isn’t a pillar of Islam, Salah is. Yet, the punishment for a thief is severe – “cutting-of hands”, while a non-praying Muslim can roam freely. This is because sins like stealing are community-based, and thus, the severity of the punishment is proportional to the impact on the community.

As we navigate this complex landscape, it’s crucial that we pray for guidance, starting with ourselves. We should strive not to influence anyone towards actions that displease Allah. It’s also our responsibility to monitor the influences on our family and friends, particularly where they’re getting their deen and their knowledge, both worldly and deeni. We need to be aware of who they’re following, as we will be held accountable for those under our influence.

In conclusion, the role of influencers in shaping or ruining the minds of their followers is significant. It’s a responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. As followers, we must also exercise discernment in choosing who to follow and how we let their influence shape our lives.
